This is the Longest G Scale Train on YouTube! This incredible 152 car train is being pulled by (1) single USA Trains Big Boy locomotive. On the third segment of this video, we swapped out the (1) USA Trains Big Boy for (6) Aristo-Craft Dash 9′s. (2) Dash 9′s probably could have pulled the train, but (6) locomotives looks much more impressive. Every car in this train has had the plastic wheels changed out to metal rolling bearing wheels and axles. And the funky LGB couplers were changed out to body mounted Kadee couplers. These (2) items alone almost doubled the wieght of each car. Had we kept the plastic wheels and LGB couplers on each car, it would have been alot easier to pull the 152 cars. But it would have been a lot more unrealistic too! Both the Big Boy and the Dash 9′s are being powered by online batteries and they are being remote controled using AirWire. AirWire is the greatest remote controlled software out there. It does so many things! We feel the Big Boy could have pulled more than the 152 cars you see here, but some of the couplers kept failing. The preasure of 406 pounds on the first 20 cars is tremendous! It took us (9) takes just to get these (3) video segments because of the coupler problems. If we could solve the coupler problem, I really think the Big Boy could be pulling close to 200 cars all by itself! So we will work on that for a future pull. This is my model train set which I spent a summer building. It isn’t complete, but when is it ever?

While the British Rail system closes down for “engineering works” over Christmas and New year to make it as difficult as possible for the travelling public on my model railway the situation is completely different as freight and passenger services struggle to cope with the extra traffic ! Here’s a selection of freight and passenger trains and a couple of Southern Region electric multiple units including the superb new Bachmann 4CEP and now Hornby are going to do the 4VEP ! Could there be some collusion here with Hornby possibly using a modified Bachmann tooling ?

Model railroad trains are the focal point of a model railroad display. They are the reason for everything else: the scenery, buildings and accessories. The train is what everything else is built around, and the scenery and buildings progress as the train moves through one section to the next in your display.

In order to suit a variety of themes, preferences and space constraints, trains come in many different types and sizes. The trains themselves are regulated by the National Model Railroad Association, also known as the NMRA. This organization promotes standardization within the hobby and creates universal measurements for trains and accessories across brands so that, for example, an HO scale model under one brand is compatible with an HO scale model made by another.

Types of Trains

The theme of the display will point you to the type of model railroad trains that you should use. Various types of trains include:

Steam- Real steam trains are powered by steam engines that burn wood, oil or coal. Model steam trains are generally suitable for the time period between the early 19^th century and the middle of the 20^th century, when these trains were used most often.Diesel- In real life, these trains are powered by a diesel engine. They quickly became the primary mode of locomotive transportation in the 1950s. Over time, diesel trains transformed into “hybrids” such as diesel-electric, steam-diesel and diesel hydraulic that are used even today. Therefore, versions of these model railroad trains can generally be used for themes post mid 20^th century.Electric- The first electric locomotive debuted in the late 1800s in response to the pollution that steam engines were producing. Some of these locomotives run from overhead lines or on-board engines running on diesel or gas.

Types of Cars

The cars that follow behind the model railroad train’s engine also model after the “real thing.” The cars help to illustrate the train’s purpose, furthering the theme of your display. The two general classes of cars are cargo, also known as freight, and passenger. Cargo cars are used to transport goods and livestock, while passenger cars are used to transport people.

Depending on your theme, some varieties of cargo cars that you may want to integrate into your display include:

Stock - used for transporting animals such as cows, pigs or sheepBox – a closed car used for freightHopper – an open or closed car used for transporting coal, iron and grainsRefrigerator – a car that may be used for carrying food items

If your display includes railroad station stops for passengers, you may want to include some of these passenger cars:

Coach – the general car used for transporting passengersDining – the car where passengers can sit and enjoy a mealSleeping – also known as a Pullman or sleeper, the car that provides passengers a place to rest if traveling overnight or for an extended period of time

Anyone who says that a model train hobby is only another way of wasting time has not really tried it hands on. Being that this conclusion could only come from somebody who is not really into it, it may only be false. The truth is that the creation of train models and tracks requires patience, technical skills and creativity.
