Originally shown on Saturday mornings in 1975. Part of the ‘Model World’ series of modelling programs hosted by Bob Symes. The last three programs of the series were all about model railways. For those of us of a certain age, these programs hosted by Bob Symes, introduced and opened up the fantastic world of models, and for me personally, model railways. I therefore consider it selfish to keep the now aging vhs tape of these model railway programs (videoed some almost fifteen years ago), to myself. These model railway programs along with childhood hero Bob Symes (who id still like to meet) remain personally as fantastic and inspiring today, as they were all them years ago as a child. I hope you still enjoy them today as much as I still do. Enjoy.

American Locomotive Company’s Largest Operating Steam Locomotive passed through Sibley Iowa today. “Challenger” (No.3985) is on a 1750 mile, 5 state tour that will end back in St. Paul Minnesota, where it began 16 days ago. It was built in 1943, and it was an amazing machine to watch, as you will see in this video. It’s a 10 scale mile model garden railway of 1 scale, in a 1/12 scale miniature village. The line was started circa 1929 and has been updated continuously for 80 years. We strapped a camera to the front of one of the engines and sent it off – we’ve added some subtitles so you can see what you’re passing. Model railways rock. The huge model railway has evolved since those early years, from Bassett-Lowke LNER and GWR outline stock through to modern image British Rail – when at one time, class 47, class 37, Hymek, western class 53, intercity 125 and even DMU stock ran. In the early 1990s, interest in the railway’s heritage regained, and it was decided to revert to a classic 1930s appearance. Therefore you’ll now see classic GWR railmotors, EMU, GWR 94xx tank locos, LMS Jinty, SR Q Class and many more freelance locos on the route. The whole system is controlled by computer, interlocked with hundreds of relays for points and signal operation. Note that the signals are missing in this video, as they are currently all being refurbished. The complex trackwork around Maryloo station is controlled by a Westinghouse lever frame in the signal box (where this video begins and ends) when the signalman wants to intervene. This train was preset to run non-stop – but of course would need to stop if another train was in the block ahead of it …

Here’s a video of Lionel and MTH Electric Trains Union Pacific Heritage SD70ACe’s in action around the Christmas Tree. The Union Pacific painted one locomotive in a special paint scheme for six of the railroads they bought over the years. There was a locomotive painted for the Missouri Pacific, Western Pacific, Missouri Kansas Texas, or often called the Katy, Rio Grande, Chicago and North Western, and the Southern Pacific. Both Lionel and MTH Electric Trains made models of each locomotive. Both companies, in my opinion, did an excellent job making these locomotives. Starting on the outside track are Katy and Missouri Pacific locomotives made by Lionel pulling a double stack train. The second track in has Southern Pacific and Chicago and North Western locomotives made by Lionel pulling a mixed freight. The third track has Rio Grande and Western Pacific locomotives made by MTH Electric Trains pulling a hopper train and on the inside track there is a Union Pacific locomotive made by MTH Electric Trains pulling a train of pulpwood and lumber cars. The rolling stock is made by Atlas O, Lionel, MTH, and Weaver Models. The trolley is made by Industrial Rail and has been serving this city since 2001. In this video you will see almost all of the village I set up under the Christmas Tree. What started with a gas station and school has grown into a small city over the years. This is a 1930′s style model railroad called Douglassville Locomotive Works (DLW for short). This layout is located in Douglassville, PA. It took the owner, Jay Matz (and friends), 20 years to build this large layout, and it is still expanding! The rail line that runs two Shays and one Climax is “Pine Ridge Lumber” and the two main lines are “Berkshire and Allegheny” and “Neversink Railroad”.
